On Friday 26th September 2008 Gloucester City Homes and Matson & Robinswood Tenants and Residents Association jointly held the first 'Big Matson & Robinswood Tidy Up'.
We contacted local organisations and individuals to ensure that there was plenty of community involvement on the day. In order to be able to carry out regular litter picks into the future we used some of the Association's funds to buy 10 sets of litter pickers.
As well as several volunteers from within the Association, we had the support of Action 4 Employment, Community Payback, Gloucester Enterprise, Gloucester City Homes, Tom Hewish (Gloucester City Council Streetcare Development Officer for Matson & Robinswood), Lovell, Matson & Robinswood Community Partnership, Morrison Facilities Services, Together in Matson, Matson Baptist Church, St. Katharine's Church, Robinswood School and lots of individuals.
We cleaned up the centre of the Matson estate in the morning before breaking for lunch. We were then joined by 20 or so children from Robinswood School and headed into Robinswood in the afternoon.
The day went really well, with somewhere in the region of 36 bags being filled with rubbish. It was great to see the children caring about the environment and being competitive about collecting rubbish. Hopefully the children will carry this awareness and appreciation for the neighbourhood into adulthood. The event brought different sections of the community and organisations together for a common cause, again building upon the good work being done locally, as well as making our neighbourhood more attractive.
On Friday 25th September 2009 we held our second annual event, this time focussing on Robinswood and North Matson. We'll publish a full report and pictures here soon.
